Yarn = Southwest Trading Co. - Karaoke - color: Mermaid Mix - 1 skein (110 yds) or any other worsted weight yarn. |
Size US 6 double pointed needles |
Size US 8 - 14 inch circular needles |
Gauge - 8-9 sts per 2 inches |
Cast on 80 (20 stitches per dpn x 4) |
Work *K2, P2* rib for 1 1/2 inches |
Knit 4 rounds |
Begin seed stitch - work for 6 rounds - or 8 rounds |
Round 1: *K1, p1* |
Round 2: *P1, k1* |
Repeat rows 1 & 2 for 6 rounds - or 8 rounds |
Knit 4 rounds |
Work seed stitch for 6 rounds |
Knit 4 rounds |
Work seed stitch for 6 rounds |
Knit 1 round |
Switch to dpn (double pointed needles) when stitches no longer fit on circular needles |
Begin decrease rounds |
Round 1: *K3, k2tog* repeat (60 sts remain) |
Round 2: Knit |
Round 3: *K2, k2tog* repeat (48 sts remain) |
Round 4: Knit |
Round 5: *K1, k2tog* repeat (32 sts remain) |
Round 6: Knit |
Round 7: *K2tog* repeat for entire round (16 sts remain) |
Round 8: Knit |
*Round 9: *K2tog* repeat for entire round (8 sts remain) |
Round 10: Knit |
Round 11: *K2tog* repeat for entire round (4 sts remain) |
4 stitches should remain |
Start I cord - work for about 2 inches |
I cord = Transfer the needle with the sts to your left hand |
bring the yarn around behing the work to the right hand side |
using a second DPN, knit the sts from the right to the left |
pulling the yarn from left to right for the first sts - DO NOT TURN |
Slide the sts to the opposite end of needle |
repeat until cord is length required |
(will take several rows before tubular shape appears) |
to finish - K2tog 2 times, 2 stitches remain. Bind off knitwise |
Use remaining yarn to make pompom desired size - attatch to end of I cord with preferred method |
Finished hat fits my 4 1/2 year old |
**Alternate hat finish - finish round 9 of decrease round - cut yarn, and leave a 12 inch tail** |
use a needle and thread tail through each of the 8 remaining stitches as if to purl them. |
pull tightly to colse up the top of the hat |
(tie small knot on last stitch for stability) |
weave in ends on inside of hat. |
